the town the brewery made: Shiner, TX
oh, the places you will go
This creative life has led me to opportunities to explore places I never thought I would have the opportunity to visit. I distinctly remember having a conversation about the Alamo with a former co-worker of mine who was from the Dallas, TX area. In the middle of that conversation, I thought to myself ‘that’s probably a place I will never have the chance to visit.
At that time I was working in TV news for a local market ranking at 171. We had blackout months for rating periods when we weren’t allowed to leave town without clearing it with our News Director. This was the career I had chosen, and I was in the mindset that this type of environment would be my workplace drama for the rest of my life.
Thank goodness it wasn’t. And look where I traveled this winter…
Running my own creative agency has allowed me the opportunity to see so many different things, so now it is time for me to share it with you.
This week Olie and I had the opportunity to visit Shiner, TX home of the K. Spoetzl Brewery. Also the birthplace of Shiner Bock, Shiner Premium, and Shiner Light Blonde, just to name a few.
While the town of Shiner was quite small, the brewery was much bigger than I had anticipated. On the same plot of land as the original brew house, this craft brewery has grown to a facility that bottles 1,200 beers a minute.
We opted in to the free tour offered by the greatest local guides. Our host, Suzanne, was so kind and knowledgable. The tour was an overview of the whole bottling process, brewing process, and the science behind taste-testing the product. I was surprised to learn that Shiner beer can be found in 49 states and various countries, as well as every US military base abroad. Until 1979 Shiner beer was only sold in a 70 mile radius. When a new owner took over, he noticed all of the kids drinking it in Austin, and then marketed to the masses. It worked!
While the gift shop is small, there are many options for souvenirs, and at a great price! I noticed 11 taps available to serve you *generous* samples. Four of them are included in your tour.
There is plenty of room on the lawn for bags, beer sipping and soaking up the sun rays. The facility is very clean and welcoming, definitely a stop if you are in the area!
