3 Questions to Jumpstart Your Brand

Tackling your business brand on your own can be quite overwhelming. Thankfully, there is a whole group of people out there who make a living designing brand strategies and visual brands for people like you.

Finding a brand to fit your business is so much more than finding a logo that looks pretty.

While you shouldn’t be building your own brand (unless that is what you do for a living), building your brand should come from you, not from someone telling you what is pretty. This includes creative business owners - try not to fall deep into the trendy logo designs, but focus on what your business is actually about.

When I start a new branding project with any of my clients, they are required to fill out a questionnaire that puts us on the right track to design a brand they love. My full questionnaire has many more questions, and even gets tough for some people, but here are three questions to get you started on your brand.

Who are you?

Are you a business, business owner, flight attendant, florist, photographer, butcher, farmer, model… who are you?

This can go beyond your occupation as well. List all of the things you are, so you can dig deep and find out who you really are.

  1. What do you do?

Do you sell a product, offer a service, deliver a good? Whatever it is, tell us what you do, and remember it is okay if you do more than one thing. Chances are after you list all. the. things., a common theme will arise and we will get you on the perfect track.

  2. Why do you do it?

This becomes tough for some people, as it can get real personal real quick. Tell me exactly why you do what you do. A personal story, a look into how you were raised, a need in your community. Whatever reason or passion you have in your business, tell me about it.

After answering these three questions honestly and revisiting them to make sure you have looked at them reasonably, then we can mash them together and start the journey to finding your brand, and figuring out who you serve.

“Example: b.Creative is a creative agency offering brand strategy and visual storytelling for small businesses and ag producers in rural America. My passion for agriculture is rooted in my upbringing and the belief that producers should be able to share their stories with consumers.”

One thing to always be cautious of - don’t answer these questions a certain way because you feel like you should or that’s what so and so does or whatever the case may be.

Answer these questions fully in your own words. The best thing you can invest in your brand is a little honesty with yourself.
